Poros' Cats and Dogs
HOW HEALTHY ARE THE POROS' CATS AND DOGS?
The health of the dogs:
All the dogs in the shelter have been sterilized and vaccinated. Together with the vets the volunteers take care of ticks, flees and worms. Overall the dogs are quite healthy but many of them do cary Leishmaniasis. With only one tablet a day though the disease is completely under control.

The health of the cats:
Most volunteers which are involved in cat care are a member of Spartan Cats. They try to make sure the cats are fit and healthy.
If the cats need medical attention they will quickly make sure they see a vet. Whenever they can they will sterilize a cat and set it free after. It is the most vulnerable cats they will try to rehome. For more info have look on their own Spartan Cats site.
More info about Leishmaniasis
or Kala Azar disease:

If it's untreated it's very dangerous to the dog. Complications set in when the immune system begins to break down. Without treatment, the parasitic infection results in death within 2 years of the dog becoming infected.
People however CAN NOT be infected by a sick dog. As you can see in our blog Hunter - a very sick (and for a long time untreated) dog - is slowly getting healthy again. If you treat a dog in time though he looks and feels completely normal. The treatment our volunteers can afford is the one-pil-a-day treatment. There is a more expensive treatment which will last several weeks and will get the dog to a level on which he is considered healthy again!
